Our Talking to Others: Part One

Our Talking to Others: Part One

Order of Worship Service
Indoor @ 9:30
Prelude on organ: Nancy Lawrence (9:27)
Announcements: Dr. Timothy Gibson
Call to Worship: Romans 10:12-15 (NIV) – Dr. Timothy Gibson

12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”[a]

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”[b]

Song of Proclamation: “I Love to Tell the Story” (Hymn 626, stanzas 1, 3)
Pastoral Prayer: Dr. Timothy Gibson
Song of Praise: “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing” (Hymn 136)
Song of Prayer: “I Give You My Heart” (Hymn 528)
Pastoral Message: James 3:1-12 (NIV) – Dr. Timothy Gibson

Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Postlude – Nancy Lawrence on organ

I Love To Tell The Story

I love to tell the story Of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory, Of Jesus and His love.
I love to tell the story Because I know ‘tis true;
It satisfies my longings As nothing else can do.
 I love to tell the story, ‘Twill be my theme in glory
 To tell the old, old story Of Jesus and His love.
I love to tell the story; For those who know it best
Seem hungering and thirsting To hear it like the rest.
And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song,
‘Twill be the old, old story That I have loved so long.

O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing

O for a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemer’s Praise,
The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of His grace!
My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad The honor of Thy name.
Jesus, the name that calms my fears, That bids my sorrows cease;
‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears; ‘Tis life and health and peace.
He breaks the power of canceled sin, He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean, His blood availed for me.

I Give You My Heart  (Sing twice)

This is my desire, to honor You. Lord, with all my heart I worship you.
All I have within me, I give You praise. All that I adore is in You.
 Lord, I give You my heart, I give You my soul. I live for You alone.
 Every breath that I take, every moment I’m awake, Lord have Your way in me.
I Surrender All
All to Jesus I surrender, All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live.
 I surrender all, I surrender all;
 All to Thee, my Blessed Savior, I surrender all.
All to Jesus I surrender, Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power, Let Thy blessing fall on me.
